How to Book a Vacation Rental With Bitcoin (2026)

BitDeals.com is reader-supported. We may earn a commission when you buy through links on our site, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend.

We've covered flights, hotels and even cruises. The gap in that list is the one most people actually book: a house or apartment for a week.

Short version: Airbnb and Vrbo do not accept bitcoin at checkout. Neither does any major vacation-rental platform. That has been true since 2021 and there is no sign of it changing. What has changed is that the workarounds got good enough to be boring — which is the highest compliment a payment rail can earn.

Here are the four routes, ranked by friction.

1. Travala — the only one where BTC is the actual payment

Travala is a crypto-native travel platform listing roughly 2.2 million properties worldwide, including apartments and vacation homes alongside hotels, plus flights, car rentals and activities. Crypto is a first-class payment method, not a bolt-on, and Travala charges no additional fee for paying in crypto.

Why it's first: it's the only option in this list where the booking is denominated and settled as a crypto payment. No gift-card balance to babysit, no card to load, no leftover $37.

The honest catch: Travala's vacation-rental inventory is not Airbnb's. For city apartments and standard rentals it's competitive. For the specific lakehouse your family stays in every year, it almost certainly isn't listed. Search it first, and only then fall back to the gift-card routes below.

We reviewed the platform in more depth in our Travala review.

2. Airbnb gift cards bought with bitcoin

This is the practical answer for most people, because it keeps you on the platform you already use, with the reviews and the host messaging and the cancellation policy you already understand.

Bitrefill sells Airbnb gift cards purchasable with BTC (including Lightning), plus ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC, DOGE and others. The code is delivered digitally, usually within moments, with no account registration required — guest checkout with an email address is enough (Bitrefill, Bitrefill help center).

How it works in practice:

  1. Price the stay in Airbnb first — including cleaning fee, service fee and taxes. That total is the number you need.

  2. Buy the gift card in that amount (or slightly above) on Bitrefill.

  3. Redeem the code to your Airbnb account balance.

  4. Book. The balance is applied automatically.

Three things to get right:

  • Buy after you've priced the booking, not before. Gift-card balances aren't refundable to bitcoin. Overbuying by $200 means you have $200 of Airbnb credit, not $200 back.

  • Check the country store. Gift-card availability and denominations vary by region, and a card bought on the wrong regional store may not redeem.

  • Redeem before you book, not during. Applying a balance mid-checkout while a host has a hold on the dates is a needless way to lose a booking.

3. A crypto-funded card for platforms with no gift card

Vrbo, Booking.com's rental inventory and a long tail of regional platforms don't have a widely available BTC-purchasable gift card. For those, the fallback is a virtual card funded with crypto — Moon is the service most commonly used for exactly this pattern, and it's how people buy from retailers that have no crypto relationship at all (Moon).

Ranked third for a reason. You are adding a third party between your coins and your booking, you are usually paying a spread, and if the booking is cancelled the refund lands on the card, not back in your wallet. It works. It is not elegant.

We go through the broader category in best crypto debit cards — and the standing caution there applies here: these operators come and go, so verify the one you're using is currently in good standing before you load a week's rent onto it.

4. Ask the host directly

Underrated, and free to try. A meaningful share of vacation rentals are owned by individual hosts who also list off-platform — on their own site, on a regional listing board, or via a local property manager. Some of them take bitcoin. Almost none of them advertise it.

Two things make this work in 2026 that didn't in 2021:

  • Square's bitcoin payments reached roughly a million US merchants and are being pushed toward wider availability, with processing fees waived through 2026. Any host running Square for their cleaning or management business can potentially take BTC (The Defiant). That waiver was announced earlier this year — confirm it's still in effect before you count on it.

  • BTCPay Server makes self-hosted invoicing free, and independent hosts with a technical streak use it.

Booking direct also skips the platform service fee, which on a week-long rental is frequently 12–15% of the total. That saving is usually larger than any discount you'll find on the crypto side. Ask.

What doesn't work

Worth stating plainly so you don't waste an evening:

  • Airbnb and Vrbo direct crypto checkout. No.

  • Paying a host in BTC for a booking made on-platform. Both platforms prohibit off-platform payment for on-platform bookings. You lose the protection and you can lose the account. Book direct or book on-platform — don't mix them.

  • Security deposits. Where a deposit is held, it's held on a card. Bitcoin has no hold mechanism, which is exactly why.

Our actual recommendation

Search Travala first, because it's the only route where nothing is bolted on. If your property isn't there, price the booking on Airbnb, buy a Bitrefill gift card for that exact amount with Lightning, redeem, and book. That covers the overwhelming majority of stays with about four minutes of extra work.

And pay from a dedicated spending wallet you topped up in advance, not from cold storage under time pressure with a host holding your dates. Same rule we apply to every large purchase — see how to pay with bitcoin from a hardware wallet. For cold storage itself, our picks are Ledger and Trezor.

One timing note: with oil back above $100 a barrel, travel pricing for the next few months is more likely to drift up than down. If the trip is happening regardless, booking earlier is the cheaper version of it.
